Reducing (The first step of sustainability)

Day 2-7 March 2023

The next day, I participated in a hybrid interactive seminar on the topic "Carbon Footprint - an extended personal environmental label" at the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University in Iași.
Mrs. professor explained to the participants the importance of energy in our lives and why everyone blames carbon dioxide. She explained to them the chemical structure of carbon dioxide, what the carbon footprint is and how it is calculated (what exactly is taken into account) and about the main sources of gases with greenhouse effects.
Our students were very interested in why the amount of carbon dioxide increased a lot. They were also informed about the largest carbon dioxide producing countries in the world.
Thus, the students received information about climate change and the need to reduce pollution by applying the 3R's principles.

Then, a guided case study was organized at the Botanical Garden in Iași. The theme was "The influence of climate change on plants".
The garden's main biologist spoke to them about the history of the botanical garden in Iasi (this being the first botanical garden in Romania) and how much climate change influences the planet's flora and more. She explained to them how global warming affects cultivation systems, plant selection and natural vegetation such as forests, grasslands and forest areas, as climate is the main factor that determines their geographical distribution.
The participants from Latvia were delighted by the carnivorous plants in the greenhouses of the botanical garden.
Students had the opportunity to learn how climate change can affect plant life and talk about different factors that change ecosystems.
