Reducing (The first step of sustainability)

Day 4-9 March 2023

The fourth day began with a visit to the water purification and treatment stations in the city of Husi. Mr. Dorin Prepelita, a chemical engineer from the water treatment station, presented to the students and teachers what water pollution is and what are the steps that the employees of the station take to clean it up. The engineer explained to the participants how all waste water is collected through the sewage network, how it is purified and the sludge treated, in compliance with national and European quality standards. Also, through a continuous dialogue with the participants, they talked about how water pollution can be reduced. The students actively participated in determining the degree of water pollution in the station's laboratory. The students were shocked by the fact that very polluted water can be purified.
Then, we went to the water treatment station, where engineer Petru Dacu explained how water from the Prut river is collected in the water tower and subjected to several treatment cycles. These practical activities were carried out in collaboration with the experts of the company AQUAVAS SA, according to the concluded partnership.

Then, the director of the Vaslui Environmental Protection Agency, Ms Mihaela Budianu, doctor of engineering, presented the main actions of the European Union in order to reduce consumption, spoke about the European Green Pact and the Kyoto convention.
The students had the opportunity to ask about local and national environmental problems and what sanctions are applied in Romania if they do not recycle selectively, with reference to individuals and companies.

The fourth day ended with a hike to the Dobrina Forest. The movement was made on foot, some of the students having bicycles. On the way, the students and teachers distributed to the locals the leaflet they created on the third day, discussing with them the objectives of the project and the activities carried out.
This activity was designed to highlight how daily transportation increases our carbon footprint and how we can adopt a sustainable mode of transportation. During the hike to the forest, the participants carried out greening activities.
