Learning, Teaching, Training Activity 4

Energy Saving

Second day-17th January 2023

The second day started with an interactive presentation on the topic "Energy conservation - a step towards sustainable development", the presentation being made by the physics teacher of the host school, Faruk KİRAZOĞLU.
Students worked in international groups. Each group having the task of identifying ways to save electrical, thermal and mechanical energy in different areas (energy used in heating and preparing dishes, heating water and lighting, using household appliances and transport).
A representative from each team presented their group's ideas about saving energy, and the other students could add new ideas if they had any.
The students had as a preliminary activity to record the household energy consumption for the months of November and December.
The spoke person of each team presented his team's statistics.
At the end, the activity was evaluated through a test for energy conservation at home.

The school's physics teacher presented the students with how much energy each electrical appliance in a house consumed.
Then, each team presented their school's energy audit, noting that the value of energy consumption is influenced by the size of the school and the number of students.
Thus, the schools in Romania and Latvia, being smaller schools with a smaller number of students, have a much lower consumption and a better management of energy consumption, and the 2 schools in Turkey have a much higher consumption (having more buildings and many more student).

The last activity of the second day was a case study at the Guris Belen Wind Power Plant in Iskendeun. After they were informed and signed that they were aware of the labor protection rules, the participants received the necessary equipment. The person in charge of the platform presented the Guris Belen project to the participants. The participants learned that the purpose of the project is to contribute to the increase in energy demand by providing clean energy from renewable sources (more precisely that of wind). They were informed that this project is 100% environmentally friendly and that there are no hazardous emissions for the environment or human health. The students were impressed by the fact that everything that happens in this station has no negative effect on the quality of water and soil and on the population of flora and fauna in the region. They were also amazed to learn that the project is estimated to save the world from 60,250 tons of environmentally dangerous CO2 emissions annually compared to conventional power plants and that the project will reduce dependence on external sources of energy demand by supporting the use of domestic sources in energy production, while providing jobs to the inhabitants of the region. The participants had the opportunity to see how wind energy is produced and accumulated, for all of them it was the first time they saw such a wind power plant.
