-Reusing (The second step of sustainability)
Second day-3rd October 2022
The second day of the LTT started with an interactive presentation by an expert from the non-governmental organization "Zero Waste Latvia", Mrs. Laura Dzelzkalėja. "Zero Waste Latvia" is a movement that brings together sustainability enthusiasts to make life without waste in Latvia a norm, as well as a non-governmental organization founded in Earth Overshoot Day (August 1, 2018) that supports and promotes principles of zero waste lifestyle and circular economy, and seeks to reduce the environmental impact of pollution caused by Latvian society.
Ms. expert spoke about "Reuse of waste". Thus, the participants learned about the life cycle approach and product design, about the annual amount of garbage per capita in Romania, Turkey and Latvia compared to that in the USA; the students were surprised to learn that half of the amount of garbage produced is household garbage; about the linear economy and the hierarchy of waste management. Together with the expert, the students deduced the life cycle of a product and what lifestyle changes they can make on a personal level. After learning about different types of packaging, the students worked in mixed groups and created a plan to reduce and reuse packaging.
- A practical workshop with the theme "My eco style" followed, the trades teacher of the host school, Mrs. Baiba Zakis, spoke to the students about the differences between the linear and the circular economy. The workshop started with a frontal problem-solving activity, the students being asked what to do with a t-shirt they no longer wear. The students' answers were written in the form of a mind map on a flipchart. The teacher explained to them that textiles and clothing are a fundamental part of everyday life and an important sector in the global economy and that it is hard to imagine a world without textiles. The students were surprised to learn that large amounts of non-renewable resources are extracted to produce clothes that are often only used for a short time, after which the materials are mostly landfilled or incinerated. An activity in mixed groups followed, each group having to answer a question related to clothes. To their surprise, the students learned through this activity that less than 1% of the material used to produce clothing is recycled to produce new clothing; that it is estimated that more than half of fast fashion clothes are thrown away in less than a year and that 20% of industrial water pollution globally is caused by dyeing and treating textiles. The students then watched two videos on how to create a new fashion industry that is not wasteful and how to make a fashion circular. The students were divided into mixed teams and had the task of transforming old clothes into new clothing items or accessories. At the end, a fashion show was held with the clothing items and accessories made by the students.
