Learning, Teaching, Training Activity 3

-Recycling (The third step of sustainability)

Second day-22nd March 2022

The second day started with a debate on paper, plastic, glass and metal recycling. The debate started with the exposition of a situation - the problem: "Imagine that we simply throw away all the waste at random. What consequences can this have for nature? For human activity?". The participants presented arguments for and against recycling. Next, the teacher explained the difference between garbage and waste and followed a presentation of the types of waste, explaining the stages of recycling and the color code for selective collection. An activity followed in which the participants worked in their own team. Each partner team had to report to its own classroom, are the rules of selective waste collection respected? Let's give a note! On a scale from 1 to 5 (where 1 means not respected at all, and 5, exactly respected), say how the selective collection of waste is respected in the classroom.
Through this activity, the students developed the habit of respecting the rules of waste collection and storage by category; have identified practical solutions at hand regarding the problems of selective collection in school and at home; developing their communication skills and expressing personal opinions and critical ideas regarding the topic of waste.

The next activity consisted in making trash cans for selective recycling. Three mixed groups of students were formed, each group creating baskets from different materials (plastic, cardboard).

The day continued with an informal meeting with the mayor of the city and the governor of the Dortyol region. During the dialogues with the representatives of the region, the students were curious about waste management in the community and about the sanctions that the Turkish municipality applies in case of non-compliance with the selective recycling rules.
At the end of the day, the participants went to a Waldorf kindergarten and a vocational high school. Thus, they had the opportunity to know the Turkish educational system. At the kindergarten, they noticed that from an early age, children are taught to have a friendly attitude towards the environment, having the opportunity to interact with different animals and birds, which the kindergarten had. At the "Recep Atakas Meleski ve Teknik Anadolu Lisesi" high school, the participants had the opportunity to get to know a Turkish vocational school.
