Learning, Teaching, Training Activity 3

-Recycling (The third step of sustainability)

First day-21st March 2022

On the first day, the representatives of the host school welcomed the partner teams and presented the institution. Then there was the presentation of the project (of the purpose, objectives and mobilities), each team presented itself and also presented its school. The host partner presented its team and the program of proposed activities.

This was followed by an information session about recycling, about Sustainable Development Goals and the European Green Pact, conducted by the biology teacher of the host school, in collaboration with the school's project manager, Mrs. Ayse Nur Ten.
Thus, the participants were informed about the 17 SDGs, with an emphasis on SDG13-Climate Action, SDG 12-Responsible consumption and production, SDG7-Affordable and clean energy, SDG11-Sustainable cities and communities, SDG14-Life below water and SDG15- Life on land and about the European Green Pact as Europe's response to the climate crisis.

Then, the students answered the question "What do you mean by the 3 r's". Through the dialogue, the students understood the effects and consequences of climate change – both the phenomena that are already occurring and those that could occur in the future if the current trends of temperature increase are maintained. Then, the teacher presented a situation-problem: "What can we do about climate change?". The students came up with solutions that they argued. The proposed solutions were about how to protect nature more and reduce our impact on it, the students proposed as a solution the rule of the 3 R's: reduction, reuse and recycling.

At the end, the students were divided into three mixed groups, each group had to make a poster with a motivational slogan about the environment. The students worked in the Canva program, and the products made were exhibited and presented by the representative of each group.

After lunch, a study meeting was held at the Mega Agriculture citrus orchard with the head of the Dortyol Chamber of Commerce. Here, students had the opportunity to see how citrus fruits are sorted by category. The higher quality ones are destined for export (Dortyol being one of the major citrus exporting areas in Turkey), and the lower quality ones are recycled, resulting in cosmetic products, following their processing by local producers.
The day ended with the observation of Burnaz beach, which, due to pollution, was full of dead jellyfish. Thus, the participants realized how harmful the effects of pollution are on aquatic fauna and flora.
